The Crown

For thirteen years Jeffery Dunn
held it together for his son
on a quiet nights he cooks and cleans
and settles down to watch the big fight
and in the third the phone rings
Jenny McGann was in town
said she was staying at the Crown
Dunn looked at the sleet slide down the windows
says tomorrow night I’ll be there from six
Hears her crying down the wire
thinks God damn Jenny no good liar
As the morning pale light
came creeping through the home
he wakes his sleeping son
drinks half his coffee and off they go
At work he sells insurance plans
to newly wedded couples
he looks up as they smile
thinks trouble finds us in the end
He says young lovers have their struggles
but you can’t dig a hole if you can’t buy a shovel
Looking back in to the night
see’s a little snow coming down
dogs chasing their shadows in the town
Jeffery walks into the Crown
All walks of men drink side by side
Jenny McGann calls his name
he looks into her eyes
blue eye’d rivers flow
back in time
Says honey don’t look at me with those eyes
why you gonna come around here this time
say’s the last was the last time you broke the boys heart
its not the first time darling you’ve wanted a new start
Jenny McGann and Jeffery Dunn
walk through the front door of their home
in the kitchen he takes a chair
she checks their sleeping son
Dunn watches the snow black out the windows
thinks trouble finds us in the end.

Boys
03:25

Tina can I have a teenth
morning light bleeding in
Tina can I have it all so sweet
morning in the household
I go down to the carnival
I can’t find my boy’s
I can’t find my boy’s
I can’t find my boy’s
Now come the days of begging
now come the days of theft
now come the days of walking
in a street without a home
where there walk no soul left
where there walk no soul left
I can’t find my boy’s
I can’t find my boy’s
I can’t find my boy’s
And where were you
in the middle of the night
wrapped in the arms of
a warmth so tight.

Tough Love
03:25
|
|||
Last night I saw you in the doorway
as I was standing in the rain
where two hearts meet
between the wood and the chain
I’d stumbled off the deep end
between those concrete cracks
picking up the pennies from my pocket
and putting each on back
Is our love not tough enough
is our love not tough enough
or am I just giving in when you’re just giving up
or am I just giving in when you’re just giving up
Well it’s valentines for reprobates
and I was first in line
I thought if I just walked away
you’d be two steps behind
lights turn down so low
I guess she wonders what it’s worth
to keep a little spark burning
it’s just a flicker in the universe
Is our love not tough enough
is our love not tough enough
or am I just giving in when you’re just giving up
or am I just giving in when you’re just giving up.

Midnight Pine
06:26
|
|||
He awoke in woods in the cold of the night
he’d reach out for his child sleeping by his side
nights beyond darkness and days more grey than before
like the onset of glaucoma through the peep hole of a door
A beam of light hit them hard in their eyes
uncle Charlie and his men had caught them by surprise
dogs bolting and crazed for the fear and the thirst
their barking cracking through the stones of the Earth
His head hit the dirt then a boot on his throat
the men yanked the ropes and put the dogs in a choke
a figure gripped the boy and dragged him into the brush and the trees
tearing out the filler from his jacket sleeve
in the midnight pines
in the midnight pines
Half a dozen men round a circle on his father
the boy heard the blows to his head harder and harder
sucking on the last of the cool night air
his breathe it laboured in a hopeless despair
He spluttered and wheezed on a bed of leaves
he mustered what he could and begged brother Charlie please
Charlie’s boot on his throat just the wind and the pine
snapped right through the bone to the vine
in the midnight pine
in the midnight pine
There was no account no mark for his life
they dug an unmarked grave too short for his height
his body just slumped like a drunk in a doorway
Charlie took the boy and said I’m sorry for what you saw
Some months later in Ashfield juvenile
for beating a boy all bloody and wild
three years later a young funny looking man
he stepped out of Ashfield with a letter in his hand
His uncle had written him and told him where to come
for the answers to what his father had done
in the midnight pine
in the midnight pine.

High Price
04:08
|
|||
Always wanted to be a soldier
since I was three years old
but then I grew a little older
Thats when my asthma put that dream on hold
spent time working on a dairy farm
for a while I thought I’d made it good
but then I lost my mother
thats when I found the YPG brotherhood
Pay a high price
roll the last die
don’t think twice
I told my father I was travelling
shit I don’t like to lie
I travelled on the sand roads to Rojava
And when I arrived I told him I was alright
Pay a high price
roll the last die
don’t think twice
My nom de guerra was Givara Rojava
I was a soldier in war for something worth fighting for
In the siege of Manbij city
days and nights spent pushing that line
bullets flying men were crying
sleep was hard to find
I see a young brother running
running for a beat up door
rigged to blow and it blew out
blew his ass straight to the floor
Pay a high price
roll the last die
don’t think twice
I dropped my gear and I was running so fast
a thirty metre dash into the darkness of the blast
In the kingdom of the blind
the one eyed man is king
I ran into my mother arms
and the rest feels
Just like a dream.

Body Shop
03:04
|
|||
William slides the gates out
as buzzards cry and glide across the lake
headlights coming up the road
they park onto the pits
and strip the cars to their bones
His father opened up a body shop
he’d toil night and day
until he his heart gave out
and William the found the debts
he could never pay
He’d do ten cars in a night
with a little snow to help him speed up the game
and walk out in to the day light
to pay off the debts inherited
to his name
One cold evening
Will looked on to the lake
the wind carried the silence
then they were charging up the road on the breeze
the police sirens
He ran out into the lake
out in to the deepest darkest place
he crawled on to the banks
held up beyond the trees
barely breathing
They were shutting down his daddy's body shop
raping all the memories of the cornerstone
he turned into the brush
leaving his footprints
in his homeland.

Slow Dive
04:21
|
|||
I knew a girl she was a sweet sweet thing
I was twenty one and she was seventeen
I’d walk her home almost every night
I wanted to be something more in her life
I never was
and now theres a cold wind blowing
and time keeps going
but I’m still there
in the place on that street
I hear her voice call out to me
it’s a slow dive drowning out
a mortal man’s mind
She’s settled down now she's all grown up
she raised two kids in the basement of a corner shop
some nights I see her when I go in
to buy a beer and scratch cards but I never win
I never win
and there’s a cold wind blowing
against my hand
wrapped around the can
and if I stood if I stood real still
I’d hear her voice flowing down the hill
she's a slow dive drowning out
a mortal man’s mind
Her ghost white skin and cherry plum eyes
her bastard kids her husband died
and I am stumbling I am four sheets to the wind
she is staring for a moment and then she cries
She cries
and it cuts so it cuts so deep
it makes me turn and reach out to sweep
her tears and all of those wanting years
I hear her say something sweet
she's a slow dive drowning out
a mortal man’s mind.

Out In The Bay
03:50
|
|||
I was working for the local fishing company
and one cold morning they called me and Rory back from sea
their business had folded they were shutting it down
they gave us our last of our cut and sent us downtown
Rory and me had been drinking all through the day
and at some point I must have passed out and he swept my keys away
Some nights I wake up
and I’m out in the bay
I caste my nets into the waters
and watch I them drift away
I walked through the front door I climbed up the stairs
I walked into the bedroom and they were just lying there
and no I didn’t I didn’t think twice
my father always told me you can’t steal another mans wife
Some nights I wake up
and I’m out in the bay
I caste my nets into the waters
and I watch them drift away
And I hear a sweet boy
calling out my name
I reach down into those cold waters
and I fade away
I go down.
